The kazunomiyx of Japanese culture during this time period was very interesting, but I do wish that the other included a bit more detail about the significance of some of the ceremonies either in the actual diary or the historical notes. How are they celebrated today? That is not to be though, since tying the Imperial house and that of the Shogun would kazunlmiya the Emperor more power, and he could then expel the “barbian” Americans who demand he sign treaties.
It was interesting to see how even though Kazunomiya lived a life of luxury, she knew nothing about the world around her.

Her arranged marriage to a kzaunomiya prince she has fallen in love with is canceled, and a new husband is chosen for her to cement the connection between her royal family and the army.

Meanwhile, presumably to cheer her, Kazunomiya’s lady-in-waiting, the elderly Auntie Umi, arranges for her to secretly meet Prince Arisugawa on several occasions. I rarely read historical fiction, but this was a refreshing read for me. As a princess of Japan in the yeartwelve-year-old Kazunomiya oof a life of privilege and luxury.
This book I found to be a fairly accurate, believable, and interesting historical fiction read that I wanted to keep reading until the end; The time set of ancient Japan has always fascinated me.
It was an interesting book, but I was rather bored through a lot of it.
Why was the person chosen for Kazunomiya to marry changed to another groom? What would you call it and why? Part of the reunification plan between the these groups involves young Princess Kazunomiya, the Emperor’s half-sister, marrying the heir to the shogunate, Tokugawa Yoshitomi—even though she’s already engaged to, and in love with, another nobleman.

So in short I think the information about life in Japan and the relatively drama-free approach to the inevitable romantic entanglements are the most unique things about this story. Kazunomiya is the daughter of the former emperor and his chief concubine.
The Emporer requires her to change her birthdate so she is the same age as the Emporer. Sometimes you forget at all that you are reading diary entries at all. Overall I think she did capture the voice of an elegant Japanese princess, kazynomiya successfully communicated some of the vicious trials of court life.

Yes, Japan and the Imperial court were both incredibly isolated from the outside world, but surely there would have been some news that reached the ears of Kazunomiya.

A beautiful book, although I wonder about her ease in falling in love kazunomiys her original intended.
