I wouldn’t want this to be my only recording of bruxh Mendelssohn, but it’s a good choice at any price. Sometimes recordings of the Mendelssohn Octet pair an established quartet with a younger group. It’s a work of astonishing passion for a composer so young; one can practically hear Felix’s hormones coursing throughout this work.

The E flat minor octey begins with a singing theme and continues with a more ardent and positive theme in the major; after a march-like passage, the second theme returns and the movement ends quietly. Mendelssohn’s beloved Octet was written when he was 16, and immediately preceded his overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Despite the circumstances of its composition, there is nothing valedictory about the octet: There’s little about it that seems valedictory, however.
